Bryan Warren over at Joker Machine sent me another replacement part that completely overshadows Triumph’s – the Joker Machine Triumph clutch cable bracket. Wow, what a difference. The Bonneville is a beautiful bike that Triumph keeps cutting corners on. Joker Machine steps up and gives the bike the respect it deserves. Triumph… are you listening?
What is up with Triumph?!?!?!

This is a fairly simple mod. We’re simply replacing the Triumph cheap-o stamped metal clutch cable bracket with the Joker Machine. Not a lot of heavy lifting involved.
The clutch cable needs to be released from the clutch arm. In order to do this, the right side adjusting nut need to be loosened to allow for play so that the cable end (aka, nipple) can be slid out from the clutch arm. Once you have enough slack, you’ll need to manually rotate the clutch arm to the left so that there is enough slack to slide out the cable end.

Now comes the hardest part of this mod. That little rubber hood is there to prevent water from coming in (and subsequently causing rusting). You need to slide it over and off the cable end nipple in order to remove the right side nut and thus allow you to remove the entire cable housing from the clutch cable bracket. Prepare yourself. It’s difficult to remove but it’s even more of a bitch to slide it back on. It caused more than a few curse words.

With the right side nut and rubber hood removed, you can now free the cabling from the bracket.

Using a #mm socket, undo the two bolts and remove the Triumph bracket.

Seat in the Joker Machine bracket. It comes with two gold plated bolts that require a #mm allen key.

I’ve said this in my other posts. I am not a fan of Joker Machine’s use of gold plated bolts. This is my own aesthetic issue – the gold reminds me of cheesy 1980’s bling trying to stand out. Joker Machine seems stuck on it and that’s their choice. It’s an easy problem to rectify and one I’m easily willing to do given the quality of their machined parts. In this case, I simply reinserted the Triumph bolts.
Now reverse your steps and route the clutch cable through the Joker Machine bracket. I warned you about sliding the rubber hood back on, so put yourself in a calm place before attempting it. I suppose that you could lube it to make it easier but I was worried that this would compromise its water-proofing.

You might need to adjust your clutch but I found that I didn’t need to. I kept the left side adjusting nut in place. Had I rotated it, I probably would have needed to readjust the clutch. If you only play with the right side nut, you shouldn’t have to adjust the clutch as it doesn’t have a bearing on the cable travel. Its purpose is to keep the left side of the housing firmly planted to the bracket and thus keep the cable from shifting.
Not a performance enhancing mod but definitely a very cool aesthetic enhancement mod (sans the gold bolts).
